Sandi Bulimbašić was born in Split in 1969. She graduated in Art History and English Language and Literature from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb in 1996. She received her PhD degree in Art History from the same University in 2014 with the thesis entitled Društvo hrvatskih umjetnika “Medulić” (1908.-1919.) /“Medulić”, the Association of Croatian Artists (1908-1919). In 2016 she published a book entitled Društvo hrvatskih umjetnika “Medulić” (1908.-1919.): umjetnost i politika /“Medulić”, the Association of Croatian Artists (1908-1919): Art and Politics.
Since 1999 she has worked in the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, Directorate for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, Conservation Department in Split; since 2009 as a senior adviser – conservator. Her focus is on research and protection of the architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries and she is the (co-)author of numerous conservation reports.
She is the author of numerous articles published in Croatian professional and scientific journals and publications. She has participated in numerous scientific conferences and held several public lectures. In 2014-2017 she was a member of the research team in the project Croatia and Central Europe: Art and Politics in the Late Modern Period (1780–1945) supported by the Croatian Science Foundation (leader: D. Damjanović, Department of Art History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences). Her research interest within this project has been related to the history of art in Croatia and the region of ex Yugoslavia within the context of Central European art in the first two decades of the 20th century. The focus of research was on Croatian and Central European art associations.
She is the author of numerous catalogue introductions for exhibitions of the works of Croatian contemporary artists and a curator of several photography exhibitions, including retrospective exhibition Ante Verzotti – photographs 1967-2003 (Gallery of Fine Arts in Split, 2004).
She was a member of the editorial board of the professional journal Kvartal. Since 2013 she has been a member of the Artistic Council of the Photo Club Split Gallery of Photography. Since 2016 she has been a member of the editorial board of the scientific journal Prilozi povijesti umjetnosti u Dalmaciji. Since 2017 she has been an associate researcher of the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography.
Fields of her scientific interest and research are modern and contemporary art, particularly history of artistic associations and exhibitions, national identity in art, the relationship between art and politics and photography.
