Lovorka Magaš Bilandžić was born in Zagreb in 1981. She graduated in Art History and Comparative Literature from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb in 2005. She received her PhD degree in Art History from the same University in 2012 with the thesis entitled The Life and Oeuvre of Sergije Glumac. Since 2006 she has worked at the Department of Art History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb where she teaches courses on modern and contemporary art. She is a member of a Chair of Modern Art and Visual Communication and in 2016 she was elected assistant professor.
She participated in a number of national and international scientific projects: projects funded by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia Croatian Art of the 19th and 20th Centuries in European Context (2006) and Croatian Art from Classicism to Postmodernism (2007−2013), as well as bilateral projects Croatian and Serbian Artistic Connections in the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries (2011−2012) and German−Croatian Artist’s Relations as a Part of International Artistic Networks in the 20th Century (2014−2015), project funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia Parisian Art Scene and Croatian Modern Art (2013−2015), international scientific and exhibition project funded by the European Union Bauhaus − Networking Ideas and Practice (2013−2015) and several project within the Financial Support of the University of Zagreb. From 2014 to 2017 she participated in a scientific project funded by the Croatian Science Foundation Croatia and Central Europe: Art and Politics in the Late Modern Period (1780−1945), leader: Prof. Dragan Damjanović.
She is the author of several retrospective and group exhibitions: Sergije Glumac (Milan and Ivo Steiner Gallery, Zagreb, 2005), Expressionism in Croatian Caricature (Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2011), Expressionism in Croatian Print and Contemporary Croatian Graphic Art Scene / Questioning the Medium (both as a part of the 6th Days of Graphic Art in the Gallery of Fine Arts in Osijek, 2013), Silvio Vujičić: Behind the Scene (Vladimir Bužančić Gallery, Zagreb, 2014), Foto Tonka − Secrets of a Social Chronicler’s Photographic Studio (Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2015). She is an author of the sections on the exhibitions Expressionism in Croatian Art (section graphic art, Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2011) and Journey to Eternity (section photography, Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2016). She participated in the organisation of the exhibitions Postsculpture (Croatian Association of Artists, Zagreb, 2005), Avant-garde Tendencies in Croatian Art (Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2007) and Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem – Sources of European Civilisation (Klovićevi dvori Gallery, Zagreb, 2009).
She has presented her papers in numerous national and international scientific conferences and has held a number of public lectures. She participated in an organization of several national and international scientific conferences (e.g. Art and Politics in Europe in the Modern Period, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, 2016). She is an author of the book Foto Tonka − Secrets of a Social Chronicler’s Photographic Studio and regularly publishes both scientific papers and reviews. She is a member of DPUH (Croatian Society of Art Historians) and AICA.
She has received two awards: the 2015 Annual Award of Young Researchers and Artists, awarded by the Association of University Teachers and Other Researchers in Zagreb, and the 2015 Charter of the Croatian Society of Art Historians for the promotion of art history (awarded for the exhibition and book Foto Tonka − Secrets of a Social Chronicler’s Photographic Studio)
Her fields of professional interest include modern and contemporary art, particularly graphic design, photography, stage design, graphic arts and history of exhibitions.
